GROUP PRESENTATIONS ON FILMS OPENING THIS WEEKEND, APRIL 6!
Assignment:
Write one-p$r$gr$ph $nswers to the following:
1) Why does Hollywood rele4se “m4jor” motion pictures over the summer
or 4round Th4nksgiving?
Most m$jor motion picture comp$nies would w$nt to rele$se their movies on
d$ys when they could m$ximise turn out. If $ m$rketing te$m tr$cked when
people $re the most free to pursue leisure time $ctivities, they would notice
th$t most $dults $re off work during the holid$ys $nd most children $re free
during the summer when schools $re closed. Th$tʼs why $ lot of $nim$tion
movies $re rele$sed from June to August bec$use comp$nies know th$tʼs how
they c$n m$ximise turn out from kids.
2) Do you think th4t technology will ch4nge Hollywoodʼs 4ppro4ch to
rele4se schedules? If so, how?
I donʼt think technology will re$lly ch$nge Hollywoodʼs $ppro$ch to rele$se
schedules. Even though we h$ve stre$ming sites such $s Netflix $nd Hulu,
people $re still going to the movies during the holid$ys or the summer bec$use
they ($nd their friends/f$mily) now h$ve the time $nd prob$bly $ little bit more
dispos$ble income to spend on going to the movies. Technology c$n $lso help
with rele$se schedules bec$use people c$n now get $ccess to pre-s$le tickets
online. This could me$n th$t film comp$nies c$n $ctu$lly sell f$ns tickets to
movies th$t $renʼt even out yet, gener$ting enough revenue to bre$k-even
even before the rele$se d$te.
Re$ding: Squire ch$pters 9-11 $nd 22-25; Forbes $rticle on movie m$rketing,
V$riety $rticle on m$rketing costs, $nd “Perils of Promotion” $rticle posted on
