When the balance of care is sympathetic and loving, the psychological conflict during the first year trust vs mistrust is resolved positively. The trusting infant expects the world to be good and gratifying, so he: autonomy vs shame and doubt feels confident in exploring it. This conflict in toddlerhood is resolved favorably when the parents provide young children with suitable guidance and reasonable choice. Parents do not shame the infant when he fails at new skills. If a parent is over-controlling, the child will doubt his skills and his ability to control his impulses and act competently on his own. Emotional development: development of basic emotions. Basic emotions- universal emotions in humans and other primates and have a long evolutionary history of promoting survival.
