ANTH 310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Consumerism, Resource Curse, Cultural Survival
Document Summary
Based on using the food available in nature. The main economic strategy for most of human history. Today only 250,000 people support themselves primarily by foraging. Cultural survival of foragers is at risk worldwide- resource curse outside of contact/intervention. Crop yields support denser populations than foraging & allow for permanent settlement. A family forms the core work group. Children work more in horticultural groups than any other type of economy. Gender roles clearly defined, power to distribute, rather than share in production. Private ownership & claim becomes more highlighted, room for inequality & accumulation of wealth due to production surplus. Reliance on products of domesticated animal herds. Animals & their products provide half of group"s diet. Requires movement of animals to new pastureland for sustainability. Level of wealth & political organizations varies from group to group. Little overlap between male & female tasks. Generally men herd, women process herd"s products.
