Document Summary
If we think about what and how we speak to children (in chunks), it"s easier for them to process and learn. Easier to figure out the structure of language if you analyze small chunks than if you analyze long stretches of speech. Small chunks are all that children can extract from input and store in memory. Adults, in contrast, extract and store larger chunks, thereby giving themselves a more difficult analytical task. Children attend school in new language, rich environment for new language. Older students/adults tend to have richer primary language environments. Individual differences in children"s language skills are genetically based to some degree. Language impairment- multiple genes in interaction with the environment. Complex communication in other species, but it"s not language . Everyone in her environment used asl with her and amongst each other. After 4 years, washoe learned to produce 132 signs and produce many sign combinations. Humans have a greater capacity for language.
