The ways in which people learn or observe criminal traits by the reactions they have with their peers, family, friends, etc. Doesn"t describe the definitions of positive and negative. Doesn"t describe how the process of learning those criminal traits either. Elements: family, peer groups, churches, parental efficacy, etc. Gives a justification for different types of crime committed for different types of reasons. Sykes and matza- look at behaviors and role models, we look at those role models and the behaviors of the juvenile offenders. This theory claims that criminals have the exposure to crime, and learn how to commit those different types of crime. Assumes that all people have the same moral and ethical code for everyone. This theorist predicted that people float in and out of criminality, they shift from one state to another. Assumes that all people will come into criminality the same way and by the same means.
