This term refers to a unit that is used to sub-divide or partition space. It is also considered to be a unit that encloses a space thus giving it a degree of protection from the elements. There are essentially two categories of walls namely: load bearing walls and, non-load bearing walls. These are walls that are designed to transmit imposed and super-imposed loads in addition to their own weight to a suitable foundation. They can either be external or internal walls. These walls are designed to accommodate their own weight in addition to fixings placed on them. The primary purpose of external walls is to enclose and protect the building. In domestic construction these walls may also be used to carry the loads from the upper floors and roof to the foundations.
