Document Summary

Exam 1 notes (hist 1010 with dr. malczycki) The art and science of historical research and writing. Historiography investigates old claims about the past and makes new claims about the past. Historical truth can be discovered, proven, & demonstrated in a scientific way. There is only one truth or one true story or one true history, for any event. Contradictory claims to truth compete until the truth prevails- the one truth will prevail one day. History strives to be objective, but it is usually more subjective. Postmodernism- a theory that involves a radical re-appraisal of modern assumptions about culture, identity, history, or language: major historiographical trend in the 2nd half of the 20th century. Examples: book of genesis, big bang theory, pan ku and the dao, the dogon egg. Gen. 1:1- for a lot of people, this is where history begins. There isn"t one right way to look at history.
