Peaceful protest, but at one white officers killed black protester, made them angry. The white population thought they would lose their power, they outlawed the anc. Anc goes underground, leader go into exile- get a huge presence outside of south africa. Mandela stays behind- arrested, tried, convicted of treason. Government offered him freedom, but he would have to give up his political power, but he refuses. Mandela became a symbol for people being oppressed. The government fell into the hands of military leader in 1970s. Send troops to places where the anc was active. Many were in the middle of their own independence movement. Go to the un: government crackdown & responses. International sympathy for the black population in south africa. 1976- major uprising in south africa in soweto (shanty town) Children were not allowed to learn their own language, schools forced them to learn the language of their oppressors. Many countries cut off trade with south africa.
