MGT 500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 68: French Resistance, Absenteeism, Organizational Commitment
Document Summary
We have fragile egos that see change as a threatening thing. Even when employees are shown evidence saying they need to change, they focus on data saying they don"t need to. Employees who have negative feeling toward change cope by increasing the amount of time they call in sick or they quit. These reactions can drain organizations of energy that it needs. Resisting change doesn"t just come from lower organizational levels, it also comes from higher- level managers resisting change that their subordinates may suggest. When leaders are focused on mastering and exploring things, they are more willing to use and listen to their subordinates" change suggestions. Resisting change can be positive if it leads to openly discussing things and debating topics. These are preferable responses to silence and show organizational members are engaged by providing agents of change the ability to explain the effort to change.
