Document Summary

Group property 3: status, and group property 4: size and dynamics. The status of the people you"re affiliated with can affect how other people view you. People who are stigmatized can infect other people with their stigma. This stigma by association effect can result in negative evaluations and opinions of the person that is affiliated with the person that is stigmatized. This is true even if the association is brief and just coincidental. A lot of the foundations of cultural status differences don"t have any merit. In early life, we get an us and them mentality. Culturally, ingroups can sometimes represent dominant societal forces and are given high status. Low-status groups, maybe in response to discrimination, likely leverage ingroup favoritism to compete for a higher status. When high-status groups feel discrimination from low-status groups, they might increase outgroup bias. With each cycle, there is more polarization of groups.
