MGT 500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 91: Machiavellianism, Extraversion And Introversion, Psychopathy
Document Summary
Trait theories of leadership focuses on personal qualities and characteristics of someone. For personality, extraversion is found to be the trait that predicts effective leadership the most. However, extraversion could be related more to the way leaders come about than how effective the leader is. People who are sociable and dominant are likely to assert themselves in situations in a group, which helps extraverts become identified as a leader. Extraverted leaders could be more effective leading passive groups of people than proactive employee groups. While extraversion can predict the effectiveness of a leader, this relationship could be there because of unique facets of the situation and traits. Agreeableness and emotional stability don"t appear to predict leadership, however, conscientiousness and openness to experience can. This is especially true when looking at the effectiveness of a leader. Achievement striving and dependability are found in effective managers as well.
