MGT 500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 94: Personal Development, Job Satisfaction, Job Security
Document Summary
Believing that someone"s relationship to their work is basic can determine whether someone is successful or ends up failing. Intrinsic factors like these are related to job satisfaction: People who feel good about their work say it"s because of these factors and their respective situation. People who aren"t satisfied with their work say there are extrinsic factors to blame, like: Traditionally, people thought the opposite of satisfaction was dissatisfaction. Taking away dissatisfying characteristics from a certain job doesn"t always mean the job will become more satisfying. The opposite of satisfaction is no satisfaction, while the opposite of dissatisfaction is no dissatisfaction. Under two-factor theory, the factors and things leading to job satisfaction are different and distinct from the things leading to job dissatisfaction. This means that managers that look to get rid of factors that cause job dissatisfaction might bring peace, but not motivation. These managers, instead of motivating their workers, will be placating them.
