Document Summary

In organizational behavior (ob), power is the capacity that x has to influence y"s behavior so y acts in the way that x wants them to act. This means that someone can have the power but choose not to use it. Simply put, it"s the capacity or potential to use power. The function of dependence is seen as the most important aspect to power. The greater dependence that y has on x, the more power x has in the relationship. Dependence is based on alternatives that are perceived by y and the importance that y puts on the alternatives controlled by x. Someone can only have power over you if they have or control something you want. Similarly, if you"re attending college and your parents are paying for it, your parents have power over you. Once you"re out of school and have a job with good outcome, your parents don"t have as much power on you anymore.
