When buddha first comes into china he looks very indian, and becomes chinese over time. The night before the buddha was born, his mother had a dream of a white elephant. Baby inside lotus flower is a soul waiting to be reborn. Elephant is a symbol of queen maia"s dream. Someone who has done everything they need to become a buddha. But they choose to stay on earth to help others reach enlightenment. Always shown with things you would see in daily life. Buddha was raised to be a king, so when you see statues of the historical him, he"s an every day person wearing prince"s clothes. This is indian art, so he has a very muscular body because that is there idea. Physical perfection and spiritual perfection is shown in perfect robe holds. He transforms to coincide better with chinese ideals. If he had hands they would be in a mudra.
