Philosophy of education=philosophy of ideas, not facts, flavored by personal experience. Difference btwn genuine thought and mastery of information. Ideas are dynamic, transformative, active when they lose movement, they take on the nature of information. Educational philosophy: statement of values, moral compass, abiding engine of ideas. Philosophy is always in flux, changing with societal changes. Education is cornerstone of civilization; how we grow and develop. Emerson: lays foundation of american approach to learning; self-reliance and the individual; new america, pushing boundaries of what used to be (social class, social order) Du bois: important social issues are always intertwined with education; what happens when you systematically deny education to one group of people (blacks) Addams: influenced dewey; pragmatic, social approach to education. Oakeshott: education: the way we learn to become human; learning=ongoing conversation with others; best conversations come from the best thinkers and writers; conservative view of education (conserving the past); conservation of ideas of liberal learning.
