PSYC BC 1129x Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Object Permanence, Metacognition
Document Summary
Info is encoded (taken in and retained), recoded (revised into more efficient/useful representations), and decoded (interpreted by comparing it to existing info) Info is used to understand new experiences and solve problems. We hold or store info in 3 parts of the mind. We hold info that comes in, we keep it or get rid of it, and we use mental strategies to operate on and transform this info. Info first enters sensory store/register: info is held in its raw form- sensory info is stored here for 2-3 seconds. Short term info vs. working memory: short term info is tools on your bench, working memory are the tools you are using. Info then either dissipates or moves into the long-term memory store- has unlimited capacity- info is permanent- factual knowledge, memory of personal events, skills. The executive board/central executive is the monitor of the whole system- moves info from short-term memory to long-term memory- monitors and directs all activity.
