PSYC BC 1129x Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Dishabituation, Lev Vygotsky, Habituation
Document Summary
After habituation, the original level of response to the same stimulus can return in 2 ways: Dishabituation: a new stimulus is presented, and then when the old stimulus is re-presented, the baby responds again at the original level. Spontaneous recovery: time passes when baby is not shown the stimulus, and then when the stimulus is presented again, the baby responds at the original level. Active learning- using blocks to teach kids how to count, kids participating, etc. Stages introducing new topics- informed us about guidelines for introducing new topics to kids at appropriate times. Cognitive disequilibrium deliberate presentation of puzzles- having class solve a dilemma, having a debate as an opportunity to learn something new. Infants start life w/ innate, special-purpose knowledge systems. Core domains of thought: physical, numerical (keeping track of multiple objects, adding and subtracting), linguistic, psychological (understanding how mental states influence behavior, taking perspective of other people, theory of mind), biological (bodily processes, understanding growth and illness)
