Document Summary

Study looked at gamma waves in toddlers" brains- higher gamma wave activity showed better language skills. When newborns are exposed to nonsense words, increased brain activation in temporal and left frontal lobes when repetitious words played- showed that they can detect repetition. Receptive language- discriminate sounds (perceptual development), recognize words (7 mo) Periods of language development holophrastic period: 1st period of language development. Growth of expressive vocabulary: 18 months=10-50+ words, 24 months=150-300+ words. Receptive vocabulary- 14 months=100 words- words you can understand but can"t yet say. Babies will use phrases that are 2 words but to the baby it is one word, like pickup- they don"t realize this is two words. Almost always accompanied by nonverbal elements (ex. gaga is only said in the presence of water)- single word in conjunction with nonverbal elements whole phrase/sentence. Pragmatic cues like eye gaze+emotional states (babies use eye gaze, emotional reactions, and other cues to indicate which object people are talking about)
