PSYC BC 1129x Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Statistical Hypothesis Testing, Scientific Method, Theory-Theory
Document Summary
We study research strategies to figure out what is legit and what is exaggerated, identify dependable info, build bridges: research->practice. Problems w/ study in slide 3: no replicability, he developed his own list of words, no indication that he is basing his study on previous research, select sample of kids, small sample, didn"t describe dependent measure. Theory vs. hypothesis: theory is based on repeated observation+tested hypotheses, well-established. Theory predicts variables in a general sense, hypothesis is more specific. Theory has been empirically tested, hypothesis is yet to be tested. Hypothesis dictates what tools you are going to use. Replicability (can the results be replicated by other researchers?) Indirect method (you are not actually observing the person) Problems: inaccuracies, comprehension (kids might not understand the question), selective memory, response bias. Clinical case study- trying to get a full picture of what"s going on- in-depth study of one subject. Ethnography- tries to understand culture or a social group- observing+describing what you see.
