When pearl harbor happens, congress agrees we should go to war with japan: pearl harbor december 7, 1941. Declare war on japan; next day germany declares war on u. s. First thing fdr wants deal with japan first because this part was on u. s. soil first front of war pacific ocean. 1st few months us loses more battles than it wins: many soldiers taken as japanese pows, unsuccessful because at first we were unprepared. May 1942 starts to turn in us favor: island hopping military tactic. Not until 1942 or early 1943 that fdr will help britain: once tide had turned from island hopping, fdr can go to europe to help, allied powers indirect creation. Fdr and churchill fight over where to go first: decide to attack north africa by late 1943, allied powers control area, next they go to italy.
