Largely influenced by socio-economic factors: high income countries : only 1 of the top 10 causes of death is infectious disease, developing countries : 4 of the top 10 causes of death are infectious disease. Contagious / communicable diseases: can be passed from person to person. Incidence: new cases of a disease in a population, can reveal patterns in communicability. Prevalence: number of known existing cases in population, can show severity of disease. Endemic: disease is always present in population, malaria in tropical areas. Epidemic: disease seen in larger numbers than usual, disease is seen in numbers outside its endemic area. Pandemic: epidemic that is spreading in multiple areas of the world, hiv / aids. Outbreak: large number of cases seen in an area that quickly resolves.
