PUBH 1145 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Respiratory Sounds, Differential Diagnosis, Nuclear Medicine
Document Summary
Health: they body"s natural state of well-being, characterized by homeostasis, organ systems maintain ph, temperature, fluid status, energy production. Disease: the deviation from a state of health, multiple causes from both internal and external sources. Pathology: the study of diseases and disease processes. Characterized by signs and symptoms: signs, evidence of disease observed on a health exam, abnormal pulse rate, respiratory sounds, fever, sweat, smell, symptoms. Indications of disease reported by patient: pain, dizziness, nausea, itching, some diseases can be asymptomatic at times. Syndrome: disease characterized by grouping of signs and symptoms that generally occur together. Disorder: functional abnormality not linked to specific cause. How we identify the presence of a disease. Include patient (and sometimes family) interview: starting point, begin thinking about differential diagnoses and how to tailor the exam. Diagnostic tools: lab values, cultures, radiology, nuclear medicine. Differential diagnosis: a running list of possible diagnoses developed while questioning and examining the patient.
