High quality food: low energy loss and high energy gain: big net energy. Low quality food: high energy loss and low energy gain: low net energy. Quality: amount of energy that you could gain. Meat: a lot of protein for not a lot of energy expended. Breakdown doesnt take as long, absorbs nutrients w enzymatic breakdowns. Food is easier to breakdown, doesnt have to process as much. Plant diet: hard to digest, so strategies to overcome them. Ephemeral food source, hard to get at. Get around cellulosic content by focusing on parts without a lot of cellulose. Seeds and nuts are hard to get at. Gizzard: outgrowth of esophagus to store stones to break up shells of nuts/seeds. Humans: molars grinding dentition to break up nuts.
