EESC1168 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Attractor, Chaos Theory, Infinite Set
Document Summary
Predictability; does the flap of a butterfly"s wings in brazil set of a tornado in texas? . Weather is not something that can be controlled. Any small disturbance can cause larger chaotic disturbances. Complex, nonlinear systems (like weather) have predictability limits. We have a good idea of what the weather will be today, but the forecast is less reliable 10 days from now. Chaos theory does not mean there will always be chaos. Weather behaves chaotically", but there are many nice days. A chaotic system behaves fundamentally differently from a deterministic system. There are things we can be sure of about the climate. Ex: summer will be warmer than winter. There will be more rain in the spring than in the summer and fall - don"t know exactly when they will be but know they will happen. Looks like two things are the same at first, then dramatically different trajectories. Aperiodicity - the system does not repeat itself.
