ANTHRO 2AC Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: True North, Ground-Penetrating Radar, Pueblo Bonito
Document Summary
Read: ashmore and sharer chap 5, pp 86-101. Data gathering: survey: considerations (n=3, define research questions, sampling issues, visibility of archaeological remains; Need to figure out what the visibility is in order to develop a good survey method. Very good chance of finding arch remains on the surface. Arch remains are obscured from view, not easily visible when you walk across the surface. Going to have to do some subsurface surveying. Earlier the remains, the greater the chance of them being buried: survey methods, surface survey (surface pedestrian survey); involves figuring out study area (area of concern), need a good map where you can develop your provenience. Methods: mark sample units on study area map, set spacing between crew. Members (high/low intensity), walk transects, record archaeological materials. Have crews of 4-5 people who are lined up in a line and shoot out a bearing intensity is based on how closely a crew is walking together as a unit.
