Immigration has been a fundamental policy issue for asian americans. Big increase in asian american population is directly linked to the liberation of immigration laws and refugee policies. Liberation was only possible thanks to the civil rights movement"s achievements (primarily organized by african americans) Expansion need for labor open immigration policy (to get cheap labor) Contraction close off immigration (because of the lack of jobs) Demand for labor correlates with the economy"s standing. U. s. used the racial quota system to select who could enter the country. Federal immigration laws prevented undesirables (e. g. jews, asians, italians, etc. ) from coming. refugee was defined as people fleeing from strictly communist countries. Immigration was open for refugees (only those fleeing from community, left-wing countries (not right-wing countries)) President roosevelt signed the repeal for chinese exclusion laws in november 1943. China was an ally in wwii with the u. s. against japan. The u. s. used china to win the war.
