Document Summary

Many aqueous soluions are either acidic or basic. One way to determine both the amount and the idenity of an acid or a base in an aqueous soluion is to carry out a itraion. Titraions are performed by slowly adding measured amounts of a strong base to an unknown acidic soluion, or vice versa. A large change in ph occurs when the number of moles of the base is equal to the number of moles of the acid. It is important to note that the ph at the equivalence point is not necessarily equal to 7 because of further reacion of the conjugate acid or base, the products of such reacion, with water. The ph halfway to the equivalence point is equal to pka. This informaion can assist in idenifying the acid or base being itrated by comparing the measured pka with tabulated values.
