West papua, 250-300 different cultural and ethnic groups. An area with snow mountains to lowland, mangrove palm areas with fisheries. Huge environmental diversity, so cultures and linguistic group diversity. Lots of hunting of wild pig, capital, but not as important as agriculture. Palm used for all kinds of things materials for building, eating. Everybody does hunting, caraway bird is a huge source of meat for forest people and lowland people. 1920s: students are the motors of political change, true in west papua. Strong rhetoric, one people, one language, one nation, wanted to be united. Sukarno 50"s formation of non aligned nations movements, india, egypt, mostly asian and. Sukarno came back, guerilla movement formed out of independence. Dutch gave up, by 1949 they granted independence to indonesia, sukarno was a recognized leader. 1961 dutch really are leaving, had this very strong leader in sukarno, head of west papua state.
