Aries presents death in four main phases: tamed death, my death, thy death, and death forbidden. Tamed death is associated with the middle ages and an anticipation and acceptance of death; my death is characterized more by an introspective approach to death where people began to evaluate death with an emphasis on morality (aries 104-105). The idea of thy death evolved during the sixteenth to eighteenth century and entailed an increasing socialization regarding death illustrated in the creation of cemeteries as communities of the dead (aries. Finally, the conceptualization of death forbidden came about in the twentieth century, marked by a shift in western culture that treated death increasingly as a taboo subject that is somewhat unnatural (aries 86-90). I"m interested as to why throughout western history there are these marked periods of development in the cultural view of death.
