Document Summary

Probability deals with situations in which the outcome is uncertain. It is impossible to know which side will end up on top before rolling the die. It could be a 1, or a 3. An event is a collection of outcomes to an experiment. Events are highly useful in probability, and they are necessary to describe a certain outcome occuring. For example, we could be interested in the event that the number on the die is even. This corresponds to the rolls of {2, 4, 6}. Another possible event is that the number on the die is prime. This corresponds to the rolls of {2, 3, 5}. However, events are not limited to mathetically de ned things. We could look at the experiment of the weather tomorrow, and be interested in the event that it rains. An event consists of a set of outcomes to an experiment. A procedure that has a set of possible outcomes.
