ITALIAN R5B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Theatricality
#6 1/31 Wednesday
Group Discussion:
Darkness:
● There is a shift from focusing on Manfred to Theodore as the main character
● The tunnels are a womb from which Theodore was reborn, he was a peasant but now he
had a father and a legacy
● There is physical as well as spiritual darkness
●
Fate & Family Secrets: P.59 (Injurious as this challenge was…)
● Manfred took over the castle
● Manfred was very bothered by the mention of Alfonzo
● Was Manfred more concerned with having a son with Isabella or regaining control of
Otranto? Are the two the same?
● Another theme arises: reason / rational thinking vs. passion
● Manfred marrying Isabella to have sons, corrupt as it is, is rational, but we first see
Manfred pursuing Isabella out of lust, rather than calculating. So Manfred’s means are
unjust regardless, but are his motives out of rationality or passion? Or both?
Corruption: P.65 (Ye see gentlemen...
● Using his cunning wit to trick the knights
● Knights’ reactions in brackets look like stage directions and give a visual effect, adds a
sense of theatricality.
● We know Manfred isn’t telling the truth here, and this makes his speech even more of a
performance and Manfred is the main actor
Supernatural: P.62 (The knight himself on a chestnut steed… It required intrepidity like
Manfred’s not to sink under a concurrence of circumstances that seemed to announce his fate.)
● Plumes are a symbol for legitimacy
● Manfred cannot outrun his fate
● There is an obsession with external signs of power and legitimacy. Frederic has all these
signs to his power and authority, but it also seems comical.
