MUSIC 29 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Pitch Space, Inharmonicity, Fundamental Frequency
Document Summary
Lecture 6 - feb 27, 2020 mus29 first half of the lecture in the rst half of the lecture , edmund campion discussed about harmonicity, inharmonicity, pitch, tone and note. Tones all have a fundamental frequency, but can be harmonic, inharmonic simple (few partials) or complex (many partials)). Finally comes the note (music symbol, whereby we represent the fundamental frequency for any generic harmonic instruments including all strings and blown tubes). Professor campion stated that the reduction of sounding material to a symbolic level (the note) was a key feature of western art music. The note empowered the rise of what we call a composer: a person who creates new musical works in the form of a music score designed to be played over and over again across time. Along with this development came a great narrowing of the basic forming materials for music.
