Cognitive appraisal theory

- 9/10 appraisal questions - many do not apply to all emotions
- CA: there are appraisals (set of beliefs) associated with every emotions
(feelings fused with a set of beliefs), consequences of each emotion is
distinct, behavior predictions flow from these emotions
- emotions only felt with the appraisal is present
- Ex. anger fused with a set of beliefs
- Can be something you recall, or something you imagine
- Anger appraisal:
- Something bad has happened, I know why or who/what’s to blame,
action can be taken to have things better > feel anger
- Anxiety appraisal:
- Worry about bad outcome, unsure of cause, don’t know what to do
- Hope appraisal:
- Accompanied by anxiety
Affective intelligence
- Theory that focuses on neurological function of the brain
- Emotions fall on a circle called the circumplex defined by 2 dimensions
- Degree of anxiety (anxiety flows from surveillance system) - notice
something that this threatening, frightening novel (is there is a threat) >
high anxiety
- Emotions defined by both systems
- Degree of enthusiasm (enthusiasm flows from disposition system) - notice
things are going well (how are things going) > high enthusiasm
- ** the 2 systems are pre-conscious and automatic
- Sensory information always evaluated by the two systems
- Prediction
- Degree of anxiety does not affect emotions/ choices
- But high anxiety leads you to seek out information and pay
attention to the world, anxiety fuels learning (same with CA) and
act on it
- Degree of enthusiasm affects choices
- Things go bad (high heels break > take them off)
- Things go well (deer eating dandelion > keeping doing)
- Flawed because simplistic
