PSYCH 133 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Dementia, Direct Current, Frontal Lobe
Document Summary
Same amount of time, learned to the same perfection. Time was not important for consolidation but wake and type of sleep. Type of sleep provided immunity against forgetting: sws. First two hours of sleep was very important. Easier to unlock memories at retrieval point if smelled at learning. Easier to retrieve what you learned after waking up. In sws, one group had an odorless placebo (air) Other group had a rose smell during sleep. No smell for either groups the next day. People with odor in sleep had much better recall (10-15% better) During rem sleep: would have no effect, only during sws. Two groups: smell or no smell during sleep. Results: no benefit to smell in sleep. Shows that odor and a memory must be connected. One group with placebo of electrical pulses. Other one with actual electrical input during sws. 30-50% improvement in electrical depth of deep sleep. Sws sleep deteriorates with age, as does memory.
