Document Summary

Stereotypes: a generalized belief or expectation about a group of people. Stereotypes can be both positive and negative. Stereotypes are more commonly formed about out-groups. Prejudice: attitude toward a member of a group, based solely on membership to that group. In psych, usually only linked to negative attitudes. Discrimination: unjustified treatment toward a group or person within a group based on their being in that group. This is our action (prejudice is not action, just attitudes) Teacher said blue-eyed people = better people. Next day, teacher said brown-eyed people were superior. Used 1 case to prove it (glasses) Told students that brown-eyed people were smart. Students took longer with card pack when they thought they were inferior and stupid. An interesting fact about prejudice and discrimination. Even though we relate prejudice and discrimination to people acting against others, some research has shown that we can show biases against our own groups.
