Most people (both north and south) didn"t know how bad the war would be, had romantic notions. July 21, 1861 - first battle of civil war. Gen. irvin mcdowell, 30k union troops vs gen. g. t beauregard and 22k confederates. Union was winning until they ran into line of va troops under gen. thomas jackson. Like a stone wall , gave jackson nickname of stonewall jackson . Bull run loss showed northerners taste of war, even though us had advantage in resources war against south wasn"t easy. Loyalties divided in border states (missouri, kentucky, maryland, delaware) Upper south joined confederate (north carolina, virginia, tennessee, arkansas) after. Half a million southerners volunteered to fight for the confederacy, us had to mobilize many troops around dc. Lincoln gave command of army to gen. george b. mcclellan (better at organization than fighting), he trained quarter-million men, but southern morale still high early on.
