French & indian wars: financial pressures emerged. Economic causes: need for revenue, stamp and sugar act, townshend act, tea tax. The stamp and sugar act heavily affected new england merchants & southern planters leading to alliance with other sectors. No taxation without representation : nature of self-governance at issue. First continental congress 1774: boycott of british goods agreed, many still hoped for compromise. Second continental congress 1775: battle of lexington showed that compromise was impossible, declaration of independence adopted.
