HIST 103A Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Upstate New York, Revival Meeting, Print Culture
Document Summary
Began in britain and spread unevenly across the us. Had strong links to the kinds of cultural practices and theology of the first great. Led to sweeping changes about how americans (people living in the us) thought about religion as individuals, and how they organized themselves in churches. First identifiable camp revival meeting occurs on the kentucky frontier in 1801 during a multi-day camp meeting that brought people together for an intense, emotional and focused session of worship and prayer. Used new techniques such as lay preachers (who are not formally ordained clergy) and circuit riders (preachers who, like judges, travel so people do not need an established church) People from miles around are invited to come to a place where they can worship, pray and be converted, and feel the grace of god. Accompanied by a flood of cheap print culture, including tracts and bibles. Printing became a lot cheaper with the invention of steam presses.
