Trait theory, most important people: eysenck, allport, galton, what is a trait, not, temporary states, attitudes, physical attributes, dimensional, vary along a continuum, two approaches to studying personality traits. Less important, but still relevant: approaches to nomothetic approach, theoretical, theory, common wisdom about human personality, ex: freud theories of development, lexical, words used in language to describe personality, consider time frame. Important concepts should be encoded in language, synonyms and commonalities for universals: measurement, how we assess personality today, based on theory and observation. Shown to exist in many different cultures: orthogonal dimensions/factors, unrelated to one another, by knowing one part, don"t know the whole, openness. Inquiring intellect: curiosity, open to new experiences, not same as iq. Imaginative and creative: conscientiousness, degree of organization, higher gpa and job performance, pay more attention to detail and strive, associated with compulsive neatness, workaholic behavior. Less likely to smoke, do drugs: extraversion.
