Document Summary

When combined with other social class differences in parenting strategies, social class gaps in activity participation help reproduce social class advantages and disadvantages. Social class differences in extracurricular participation is a result of differences in: Financial resources, knowledge about how to develop children"s interests and information about how to connect children to activities. 3. ecological perspective: intersection of family neighborhood and school. Parenting style is a result of what goes on in the family and in neighborhoods/wider community. Negative relationship between disadvantaged neighborhood conditions and desirable parenting practices (consistent discipline and parental warmth). Parents in high resource neighborhoods engage in promotive parenting strategies (enroll their children in structured activities). Parents in low-resource neighborhoods use more preventive parenting strategies (keeping children at home). In large schools and schools with difficult climates students are less involved in structured activities. Teachers and administrators are gate-keepers in activity participation. (stereotyped evaluations by school personnel and lower achievement of working class youth diminish their participation opportunities).
