History 121
Protestant Reformation 1500's
Only Christian religion at the time was is catholic
Lots of corruption and immorality in catholic church
Some people (monks, priests, clergy) try to reform the system
Protestants had hundreds of churches by 1517
Catholics and Protestants hated each other so much that they fought
and oppressed each other
Issues causing reformation
Peasants and lower classes are overtaxed and they are not happy
about it
Meanwhile; clergy living well
Catholic church spends too much money on land ownership
(churches and cathedrals)
Peasants are upset because they want to go to church but the mass
is in Latin which they obviously can't read because they're poor and
can't afford education. They want it changed so they can read it.
Begin drifting from church.
Indulgences:
-Started out as men paying money for someone to take their place in
war when they were hurt. But eventually evolved to wealthier men
essentially getting "get out of jail free cards" literally. If anyone was to
violate the 10 commandments usually they would go to jail. But these
indulgences became wealthy men paying their way out of jail. They
would give money in exchange to going to jail. What made the lower
classes (peasants) mad was that they could not do that. They were
poor, and it was unfair treatment.
Then there was the corruption and immorality of the Clergy
-There were special schools for clergy members children. Which is
interesting because clergy members aren't allowed to have children better
yet even marry. They were "married" to god.
