Question of why we have sex and the sexes is still unresolved! Two classes of explanations to why we have sex: gets rid of harmful mutations, allows for beneficial recombination. John maynard smith believes we have the answers in front of us, it"s just a matter of agreeing on which one it is. Disorders of differentiation: sex reversal: people with a sex reversal: xx males, xy females, xx males: some pieces of the y chromosome translocated to x or autosomal chromosome, xy females: part of y chromosome is missing or mutated. Disorders of differentiation: congenital adrenal hyperplasia in boys: males with this disorder develop adult secondary sexual characteristics (penis enlargement, facial hair) soon after birth because of high androgen exposure. In male-favored tests: low testosterone males do better than high testosterone males, high testosterone females do better than low testosterone females.
