Selection for sickle-cell anemia favored in areas high for malaria virus (as seen in map of virus distribution) The pepper moth is natural selection at work! Tuberculosis is something we don"t deal with anymore. Was dealt with using rifampin, but then drug-resistant strains happened . Had point mutation in rpob gene- went from c to g, tcg to ttg. There is a multiple choice question on this (wasserman has told us this) Natural selection works on variation already present in the population. Artificial selection in drosophila reveals that there was a lot of genetic variation in fruit flies that we did not know about in the original population of fruit flies. Most of the time, natural selection acts upon genes already present in the population.
