Document Summary

Surface area emphysema which causes problem with gas exchange. There are different ways in which the concentration gradient can change. We think of oxygen and air as synonymous but they are not. Oxygen is not even the biggest component of air that we breath. If you go to an er, they have to increase the amount of oxygen that you would breath normally + medical air. The total pressure at sea level is 760mmhg. When we talk about the total pressure and the components of air we can understand what each components give in terms of pressure to the total atmosphere. The total pressure of a mixture of gases is the sum of the pressures exerted by the individual gases. The pressure of each of the gas components is called its partial pressure. This is important because air is a mixture of gases. Chemoreceptors in our blood are sensitive to hypoxia (lack of o2).
