Greenhouse gases are trace carbon compounds in the atmosphere absorb heat energy emitted by the earth, evident from strong absorption peaks in their infrared spectra. Most attention has focused on carbon dioxide, since it is a product of all combustion reactions of hydrocarbons, and is produced every time fossil fuels are burned. Body heat is a form of thermal radiation. Temperature is the measure of how fast things are move. This graph is a black body curve , or thermal radiation graph. The higher the temperature, the greater the peak. If air absorbed light, it would not be transparent. Earth gives off infrared radiation, something other than n2 and o2 can absorb infrared radiation such as co2, h2o, etc. The infrared radiation absorbed by co2 and h2o, etc. then transfers the energy to n2 and o2 causing things molecules to move faster and thus, increase the temperature warming the air.
