CAS CH 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Lewis Structure, Intermolecular Force, Atomic Number
Document Summary
Pure vs mixture: pure substance an element or compound always homogenous. A substance is pure by definition: mixture can be homo- or heterogeneous a mixture of two or more substances. Element vs compound: an element is a homogenous, pure substance composed of a single type of atom, a compound is made up of two or more elements bonded together. All matter is made up of particles vibrating with various energies, which determines their state and predicts their physical properties. Observational operation: properties we can observe. Molecular operation: the theory of how things work not observable, but something one imagines to understand the reasons behind one"s observations. Symbolic operation: representing the molecular and observed operations with symbols, in order to clarify them and communicate about them with others. All matter is made up of atom sin various arrangements: differences between compounds: types of atoms, number of each atom, how the atoms are arranged.
