CAS HI 151 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Henry Vane The Younger, Pequot War, Narragansett People
Document Summary
There was no clear authority in new england; power vacuum. There have been contact before between the europeans and the natives that leads to disease. At this point, there were barely any europeans settled in the new world. These epidemics were cutting their numbers drastically. Narragansetts rose to power at this time because they were not hit as hard by the diseases. Narragansetts reached out to other native tribes and said that they were now going to protect them in exchange for resources and goods such as food, manpower (acting as soldiers), and wampum (currency beads) Furs led to dutch settlement in 1624 and trade with narragansetts. These beads acted as currency at the time. Plymouth is also trading for furs, but more towards the north. They wanted furs to protect against the cold, and to sell to europe. Plymouth pilgrims needed to pay off their debt to england. Pequots are growing increasingly powerful (power meaning more people)
