The Troublesome Middle East
Captain Alfred Dreyfus, 1859-1935:

Theodor Herzl one of the founders of the Zionist movement. At the age of 34 he watched in
Paris the trail of Captain Dreyfus and the anti-Semitic campaigns that swept throughout France.
When the Ottoman Empire ceased the exist in 1917, Palestine was taken over by GB. The British

Neither Washington nor Moscow knew what to think and each had different expectations.

American opinion a little however, Truman still supported Israel but Department of State did
not.
However, Israel was not ready to become anyone’s puppet. So, Stalin reacted much more
aggressively than US did. From being an all-out supporter of Israel, he became a sworn enemy
and he started preparing to carry out a major anti-Semitic purge during the end.
In 1950, he proceeded to organize a number of show-trials in Warsaw, Budapest and Prague
and all the targets were Jewish. Many of whom had been loyal to Stalin but they were still
tortured to confess being American Spies or Zionists. Lasted from late 1949 to about the end of
Stalin’s life. This was a signal to the middle eastern countries that he was no longer a supporter
or Israel and was now open to ally with Egypt.
