Popular protests: 1989 tiananmen: students/workers/business protest for democracy and liberty; against the state; military crackdown, 1998, 2005, 2012: patriotic protest anti-japan; anti-america. Endorsed by the leaders, and yet constrain the leaders" choices. Rights conscious protests: anti-factories, anti pollution; anti-land seizure; anti-local governments (constant, rising, everywhere) Rights consciousness vs. playing by the rule : right consciousness, a break from the socialist, top-down portest, citizenship, a threat to the communist legitimacy and rule, civil society. Playing by the rule : historical continuity: pre-mao and maoist era, public protest. Rights consciousness to undergird, not undermine, the authority of the state . A persistent attempt by chinese protesters to work an authoritarian political system to their own advantage . Rights consciousness in history: existing views, newness; novelty, rising rights on citizenry, counter-hegemonic, anti state, historical rebellions that challenged the state: charismatic rebel leadership, heterodox ideology, wide-spread economic crisis, foreign threat, and an unresponsive and incompetent central state.
