Ottoman empire is dismantled by the british and french in. 1918 with 3 provinces cobbled together to form a state: mosul (arab kurdish and christian population), baghdad (suni arab and jews) and basra (arab shite). The state creation through todays sectarian conflicts, you can say it"s an artificial effort which was doomed to failure from the beginning. However, there is also the case that there is long standing civilization unity which is the rivers. They form a geographic unity and as early as the 19th century talked about iraq as a geographic unit. So, the question of whether this was an artificial creation or the recognition of some preexisting unity is widely debated. Iraq becomes a mandate of lon and in other words the british government has the duty to guide the government to independence. 1932: release it into independence soon afterwards they join.
